Shriners Hospitals for Children - Chicago is looking for a PRN Child Life Specialist to join our hospital team.

Provides purposeful, developmentally appropriate, comprehensive family-centered interventions which promote and maintain patient’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical well-being throughout hospitalization.

Plans, organizes and facilitates structured goal-oriented, developmentally appropriate group and 1:1 treatment services.  These programs include but are not limited to medical play, pre-op teaching, post op  services, playgroups, out-trips and other special events. Identifies barriers and works together with the patient and family to resolve these barriers. Educates patients and family members of services, programs and/or appropriate coping techniques to use while in the hospital or at home during painful situations. Participates in the pre-admissions process to prepare patients for hospitalization. Reduces the fears and anxieties of the patients by providing preparation and procedural support to patients.

Completes comprehensive patient assessments to assess strengths, interests, needs and concerns. Documents goals and objectives as part of the patient’s treatment plan and evaluates patient outcomes. Documents progress notes and discharge planning following professional and regulatory standards. Completes all documentation on a consistent basis and in a timely manner. Submits daily logs and documentation reports in a timely manner. Dictates accurate and timely outpatient notes when applicable.  Documentation supports patient treatment plan

Job Requirements

Education:  -  Bachelors degree in Child Life or related field from an accredited school. 

Experience:  -  One or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in human growth and development, education,  psychology or related field of study.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  -  Current Certification through the Child Life Council.    Valid Drivers license.
