Job Description

In approximately 6 to 12 months, the services currently located in the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Houston will transition to the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Galveston location.

The registered professional nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transition of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Shriners Hospitals for Children Professional Practice Model (FOCUSED), which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvements efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects.


Job Requirements

Bachelors in Nursing-Required

2 Years in Acute Care Nursing- Preferred

Experience in the pediatric specialty of the hospital which may include: Maternal/Child, Orthopedics, Burn Rehabilitation- Preferred

RN license in state of practice- Required

Basic Life Support (BLS)- Required

PEARS or PALS - Obtain within 6 months of employment as required by hospital


Additional Knowledge and Skills:

Strong customer service philosophy. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Proven proactive leadership ability. Works well under pressure. Knowledgeable of regulatory agency requirements (i.e. The Joint Commission, State and Federal agencies). Member of a professional organization is strongly recommended.
