Job Description

The Physician Coder performs coding for Physician encounters at the stated minimum performance levels.  Analyzes and interprets medical information in the medical record and assigns the correct code using the ICD-10-CM and / or CPT 4 classification system to the diagnoses / procedures of Physician medical records according to established coding guidelines.

This position is being filled as a Contract to Hire position.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Coding accuracy of 95% or better is achieved – 30%
  • Ensures that when work is to the accepted level, pitches in to assist team members on a routine basis.  Volunteers for overtime – 10%
  • As appropriate, open communication related to the work environment is maintained with the coding manager and other departmental co-workers, responsive and acknowledges emails sent by Manager and auditors within the acceptable timeframe – 10%
  • Completes a minimum of 6 surgical charts per hour or 13 for E&M coding & radiology as applicable per hour -  30%
  • Completes Physician hold report updating the task queue on time and in acceptable format on applicable due dates with appropriate hold reasons – 20%

Job Requirements

The qualified candidate will have experience in the following areas

  • 3 years’ experience with ICD-10/CPT coding, specializing in physician E&M coding required

  • Computer literacy to include Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, and Excel) required. 

  • 3 years of JCAHO/DHEC standards related to ICD-10/CPT coding guidelines required.

  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology required

  • Above average spelling/grammar, and keyboarding skills (40 wpm with accuracy) required

Minimum Education Required/Preferred:

  • High School Degree required
  • Minimum of Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist CCS)/Certified Coding Specialist-Physician’s Office (CCS-P) through AHIMA, or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through AAPC, required

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:

  • Proven coding quality of 95% or higher with outpatient encounters, productivity of six (6) per hour for surgical encounters, and 13 per hour for Evaluation & Management Coding (and radiology as applicable)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Working knowledge of 3M system
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Excellent business judgment, decision making, and business savvy
  • Experience working collaboratively with IT, HIMS, Finance, Compliance, Managed Care, Business & Clinical Operations
  • Strong understanding and appreciation for the automation of revenue cycle functions and the engagement of the customer in that automated process
  • Knowledge of applied statistics, process analysis and outcomes analysis
