Job Description

The Medical Interpreter is responsible for providing interpretation and translation services for patients and family members and staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children (SHC). Services include listening to, understanding, and interpreting spoken, or translating written, statements and documents from one language to another, in support of the medical treatment plan.  In addition the medical interpreter will provide language and cultural support to patients and families and identify any cultural or language barriers to care. This service will require face-to-face interpreting between patients and providers and may also include family members or patient representatives.  The medical interpreter will also be required to provide and cultural information to the care team in order to facilitate the creation and adherence to a treatment plan and meet regulatory requirements. 

Job Requirements

  1. Works independently to assess and communicate the level of patient language translation needs.
  2. Provides interpretation for patients, families and caregivers to ensure understanding, informed consent, and ability to adhere to the treatment plan and receive full benefit of the treatment provided.
  3. Works with interdisciplinary team to ensure documentation of assessments, interventions, plans and education in the patient’s electronic medical record.
  4. Translates clinical, procedural and educational documents by providing a written or oral translation, as indicated.
  5. Assists SHC employees in understanding cultural differences and how language barriers may impact patient care and overall outcomes.
  6. Participates as a part of a multidisciplinary team (CDI/UM and Care Management) to plan future episodes of care for patients with language barriers.
  7. Proactively identifies need for and coordinates assistance of outside interpreters.
  8. Maintains ethical boundaries and professional interactions with patients and families.
  9. Facilitates service recovery for patient/family concerns when language barriers exist

Education:

      1. High school diploma/GED required, college degree preferred.
      2. Successful completion of a formal program in medical interpreting and/or translation, required.
      3. Completion of a medical terminology course, preferred

Experience:

      1. Must speak fluently in at least two languages
      2. Minimum of 1 year of experience interpreting clinical information in a clinical setting.
      3. Experience in interpreting in pediatric clinical setting preferred.
      4. Demonstrated competency with medical terminology required.
      5. Progressive experience in medical translation and interpretation including working with diverse organizations, multicultural environments preferred

Additional Requirements:

    1. Ability to understand and accurately present information of a scientific or technical nature.
    2. Must be comfortable discussing sensitive or personal issues.
    3. Proficient in assisting the medical providers in understanding the history and physical information from the patient, as well as the symptoms and reason for the patient’s visit.
    4. Ability to facilitate clinical discussion between patient and physician/provider, including interpretation of the physician /provider’s and patient and family’s questions and answers.
    5. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of cultural differences.
    6. Adheres to code of ethics and confidentiality.
    7. Demonstrates the ability to maintain professionalism and intervene when necessary.
    8. Able to manage caseload, prioritize and travel between patient care areas and off-site facilities as needed.
    9. Ability to sustain a busy and flexible work schedule with minimum supervision, and perform other duties as assigned.
