 In approximately 6 to 12 months, the services currently located in the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Houston will transition to the Shriners Hospital for Children-Galveston location.

Shriners Hospitals for Children – Houston, located in the heart of the prominent Texas Medical Center, has an immediate, one of a kind, opening for a Certified Prosthetist Orthotist (CPO).

The primary function of the CPO is to complete the design, fabrication, modification, repair and maintenance of orthoses /prostheses for pediatric orthopaedic patients as prescribed by the health care practioner. This position works as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and may participate in research activities as well as national and international outreach clinics. This role also provides cross-training and in-service education to other practitioners and hospital staff. When needed, this role will provide assistance and recommendations for assuring adequate inventory supply levels for clinic and outreach services.

Job Requirements

Education: Graduate of an ABC accredited program in both orthotics and prosthetics.


*Candidate must be certified by the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and  Prosthetics. Must be licensed in the state of Texas to practice Orthotics, or be prepared to take and pass the Texas state licensing exam given by the Texas Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics.

Training and Experience: Demonstrated sound knowledge (both clinical and technical) of O+P.  Demonstrated leadership ability.

Skills and Knowledge:
Managerial skills to direct and aid technicians in the fabrication of O+P devices; communication skills to effectively work with physicians,patients/families, all members of the health care team; professional appearance and behavior; ability to work with chemicals; working knowledge of the physical and psychosocial developmental O+P needs of infants, toddlers, school age, adolescent and young adults in the environment of care; understands and is responsible for proper documentation for medical records, coding and billing responsibilities for all devices fitted.
