Shriners Hospitals for Children® Los Angeles is currently seeking to hire a part time Cast Technician.

 

The Cast Technician is a member of the Ambulatory Services team in our Outpatient Clinic.  The person in this position is responsible for providing assistance to physicians in the application, maintenance and removal of casts, traction, and other splint or motion device as prescribed.   Informs patients/families, staff and students about the use and care of casts, traction and other motion devices; monitors and orders casting and traction supplies and equipment. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Performs direct and indirect patient care activities within the scope of practice of a Cast Technician. 

    • Maintains current schedule of cast clinics.  Schedules cast clinic appointments based on physician orders. 

    • Evaluates patients scheduled in the cast clinic.  Notes condition of the cast prior to and upon removal of cast. Inspects patients’ skin for signs of infection, redness, or breakdown.  Reports observations to the lead RN and/or Physician.

    • Participates in reviewing the content of patient informational handouts and ensures that patients/families understand what to expect during procedures.

    • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies used in the cast room. Coordinates ordering of needed supplies with Manager or designee.

    • Assists other team members with rooming patients.  Participates in other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager.

    • Reviews and coordinates the plan of care related to cast procedures with the ortho/cast technicians, lead RN and to the Outpatient and Care Management team.

    • Monitors current schedule of all cast clinics and schedules cast clinic appointments based on physician orders.

  • Performs casting and traction services under the direction and supervision of an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon.

    • Demonstrates competency in the application, removal, maintenance, and modifications of casts, splints and traction.  Assists attending in applying, trimming, bivalve, univalve, of cast and splints in the cast clinic and Operating Room.

    • Sets up and appropriately stores supplies and equipment at the beginning and end of each clinic.  Ensures that traction setups are correct and safe prior to the beginning of casting procedures.

    • Prepares patient for application of orthopedic devices, removes plaster, dispenses, applies and adjusts traction as ordered by the physician.

    • Assists Attending Orthopedic Surgeons in the preoperative assembly, application and maintenance of Ilizarov frames.

    • Monitors content of the Ilizarov Cart, disassembles, refurbishes and stores reusable parts of removed Ilizarov frames.

    • Prepares cut felt, mold skin and adhesive back form for petalling casts and applying spica casts.

    • Assists patients in using walkers and crutches.

    • Participates in the product evaluation of supplies and provides appropriate recommendations to the manager on equipment changes that would enhance and improve quality of care in the cast clinic.

    • Applies braces, checks and adjusts for function, comfort and fit.

    • Maintains patient data on the criteria:

        • Returns for cast change

        • Infections

        • Swelling

        • Slippage

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma required.

  • Minimum three (3) years hospital experience required.

  • Current Los Angeles County Fire Card required.

  • Current BLS certification required.

  • Current Orthopedic Cast Technician certification preferred.

  • Medical Assistant or Nursing Assistant certification preferred.

  • Pediatric, orthopedic, burn, or rehabilitation environment experience preferred.

  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred.
